EPS is 100% recyclable
In the US alone there are more than 200 collection sites for EPS. Post-consumer EPS is among the least costly material to recycle making it sought after by manufacturers of durable goods like video/audio cassette casings, hangers, and enclosures to name a few. Regrind is valuable as stuffing in beanbag chair, stadium seat warmers, and certain toys.
As the nation continues it's interest in global recycling it is important to realize how little post-consumer EPS is in its land-fills. According to the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers, Polystyrene represents less than 1% by weight in solid waste stream. In fact between 1974 and 1994 more than 800,000 tons of polystyrene was redirected from landfills due to source reduction (making the same amount of goods using less material) This means that 9% less polystyrene was used to make the same amount of product
over a 20 year period.
